Chrome, Cat Eye and Velvet Nails Explained

Chrome: powder, not polish

Chrome cannot be poured from a bottle. A no-wipe gel top coat is cured, an ultra-fine metallic powder is rubbed into that surface until it burnishes, and a further top coat seals it. The rubbing is the technique — too light and it looks dusty, too hard and it patches.

The finishes people ask for by name: mirror (full reflection, unforgiving of any ridge underneath), glazed pearl (the soft white shimmer over sheer pink, easily the most requested), and aura (concentrated in the center and faded out, so it glows rather than mirrors). Cat eye: a magnet, not a brush

Cat eye gel carries fine magnetic particles. A magnet held near the wet gel pulls those particles into a bright band, and the lamp locks the pattern in permanently. Every nail is magnetized individually, which is why it adds ten to fifteen minutes to an appointment and why no two nails are ever identical.

Patterns: a straight stripe across the middle, a diagonal corner to corner, or a double crossed band. The straight stripe reads best on short nails.

Velvet: the same gel, a different hand

Velvet is cat eye with the magnet drawn along the nail rather than held still. Instead of a hard line you get a soft directional sheen that shifts as the hand moves — much closer to crushed fabric than to metal, which is where the name comes from.

If you have seen deep burgundy or forest green nails that look like velvet in a photo and then look completely different in a video, this is what you were looking at. It is one of the few finishes that genuinely looks better in person.

Which colors carry which finish

• Chrome: works over almost anything, and the base changes the result. The same powder over black and over nude gives two different nails.
• Cat eye and velvet: need contrast to show. Burgundy, navy, forest, plum and black cherry carry them. Pale shades wash the effect out in daylight.
• Together: chrome on two accent nails against eight cat eye nails works. Cat eye plus glitter usually does not — they compete for the same light.

How long each one lasts

All three are gels, so they last as long as whatever is underneath: two to three weeks over shellac gel on natural nails, three to four over dip or an acrylic set.

Chrome dulls before it chips, and the free edge goes first. Frequent hand sanitizer is its fastest enemy — if you sanitize twenty times a shift, pearl chrome will disappoint you less than mirror. Cat eye and velvet hold their pattern until the gel itself gives up, since the effect is locked inside the cured layer rather than sitting on top of it.
