Coffin, Almond or Square? How to Choose a Nail Shape
Square and squoval are the most practical shapes and the least likely to snag. Almond flatters short fingers and is more wearable than it looks. Coffin needs medium length to read properly. Stiletto photographs well and is genuinely difficult to live with.
The six shapes, honestly described
- Square. Flat tip, straight sides. Strongest at the corners, best for typing, most likely to catch on fabric if worn long.
- Squoval. Square with the corners softened. Keeps most of square's durability and loses the snag. The default we suggest when someone is unsure.
- Round. Follows the natural fingertip. The lowest-maintenance shape and the one that looks correct at very short lengths.
- Oval. Round, extended. Elongates a shorter nail bed without adding much length.
- Almond. Tapered to a soft point. Flattering on wide nail beds and short fingers, and considerably more practical than it looks.
- Coffin. Tapered sides, flat tip. Needs medium length or the taper has nowhere to happen.
- Stiletto. Sharp point. Dramatic and difficult — buttons, contact lenses and car doors all become projects.
Match the shape to your nail bed
A short, wide nail bed suits almond and oval, which draw the eye lengthwise. A long, narrow bed carries square and coffin without looking severe. If your nails are naturally curved from side to side, a flat square tip will look narrower than you expect and squoval usually reads better.
None of this is a rule you have to follow. It is what we are thinking when you ask what suits you, and it is why the answer is different for different hands.
Match the shape to your week
The most common reason a set fails early is a shape that does not fit the wearer's life. Some honest pairings:
- Typing all day: squoval or round, kept short. A long square tip turns every keystroke into a tap with the pad of your finger.
- Healthcare or food service: short and rounded, and check your policy — many rule out enhancements in direct-care roles entirely.
- Small children: nothing pointed. Almond at a short length is the compromise most parents land on.
- Desk job, event coming up: this is where coffin and stiletto actually make sense — a few weeks, then back to something practical.
Where shapes break
Tapered shapes concentrate stress at the narrowest point, so coffin and stiletto sets break at the sidewall rather than the tip. Square sets break at the corners. Round and oval barely break at all, which is the quiet argument for them.
Length multiplies all of it. The single most effective thing you can do for durability is start a centimeter shorter than you think you want. Going longer next time is free; a repair is not. Details on the tapered shapes are on our coffin and almond page.
Say it with a picture
Shape vocabulary is not standardized. One salon's coffin is another's ballerina, and "almond" covers everything from a soft oval to a near-stiletto. A photo removes the ambiguity in seconds and it is the single most useful thing you can bring to an appointment.
