What each shape actually looks like on a hand

• Coffin (ballerina). Sides taper in, tip is cut flat. Needs medium length to read properly — on a short nail the taper has nowhere to happen and it just looks narrow.
• Almond. Tapers to a soft rounded point. The most flattering shape on shorter fingers because it carries the eye down the hand, and considerably more practical than it looks.
• Stiletto. A sharp point. Dramatic, photographs beautifully and is genuinely difficult to live with — buttons, contact lenses and car doors all become a project.

If you are between coffin and almond, the deciding question is usually what you do with your hands. Coffin's flat tip gives you a usable edge; almond's point does not.

Why tapered shapes cost more

Shaping is $10 on top of the set because the sidewalls have to be sculpted symmetrically down both sides of every nail, then checked against the opposite hand. A square nail is filed straight across in one pass. A coffin nail is filed, checked, adjusted and re-checked, and an error of half a millimetre on one side is visible.

The same logic applies to the fill at $55. As the nail grows the taper widens at the base, so the sidewalls are re-cut every visit to keep the shape from drifting square over three or four fills.

Length, strength and what actually breaks

A tapered nail concentrates stress at the narrowest point, which is why breaks on coffin and stiletto sets almost always happen at the sidewall rather than the tip. Two things reduce that:

• Apex placement. The thickest point of the nail should sit over the stress area rather than at the tip. That is a build decision, made while the set goes on.
• Honest length. The most common reason a set fails in week one is that it is a centimetre longer than the wearer's life allows. Starting shorter and going longer next time costs nothing; the reverse costs a repair.

A single break is a repair from $5, not a new set, and you can walk in for it.

Getting the shape you actually pictured

Shape names travel badly. What one salon calls coffin another calls ballerina, and "almond" covers everything from a soft oval to a near-stiletto depending on who is holding the file. Bring a photo — it takes the guesswork out and it takes thirty seconds.

We will also tell you if a shape will not work on your nail bed. Very wide beds fight almond, very short beds fight coffin, and there is no point building something that will look wrong on your hand when a small adjustment makes it look right.

Which services these shapes work with

All of them. A tapered shape is a structural choice, not a color one, so it pairs with pink & white, with ombré, and with any art you want on top. Almond French is a particularly common pairing and is priced as an art add-on.

Dipping powder will hold a mild almond but not a true coffin or stiletto — dip is not a sculpting medium, and a strong taper on dip breaks. If the shape matters more than the wear time, acrylic is the right call.
