What actually moves the total
Three things, in order of how often they surprise people:
- Shape. A square or squoval set is the base price. Almond, coffin and stiletto add $10 because the sidewalls are sculpted rather than filed straight. That is a real difference in chair time, not a surcharge for fashion.
- Design. A single accent nail is different from ten hand-painted nails. Chrome and cat eye are $15 across the set; more involved art is quoted before we start.
- Removal. If you are arriving in an old set, removal with another service is $10. Removal on its own is $20, so booking it with the new set is always the cheaper route.
Nothing gets added at the counter that was not said at the chair. If a request changes the price, we say so before we do it.
Full set or fill: the running cost
Over a year, most people wear four or five full sets with three fills between each. At $55 for a set and $45 for a fill, a set-plus-three-fills cycle runs $190 across roughly three months. That is the number worth budgeting against, rather than the price of the first appointment.
The fill schedule is what controls it. Stretching a fill from three weeks to five does not save money — it usually ends in a break, a repair and a set that has to be started fresh.
Why prices differ between salons
Two salons a mile apart can be $20 apart on a full set, and the gap is usually one of these: how long the appointment is scheduled for, whether shaping and removal are itemized or bundled, and how much of the price assumes a tip on top. None of that is dishonest, but it does make advertised prices hard to compare.
The honest way to compare is to ask what a full set with your shape, your length and removal of the current set would come to, all in. That is one question and it makes the numbers line up.
Where the money goes further
If cost is the deciding factor, three things genuinely help. Dipping powder at $50 runs three to four weeks without a fill cycle. A shorter length breaks less, which removes repair costs. And booking the fill on time is cheaper than any other habit on this list.
