Built, not painted — and why that matters

A painted gradient sits on the surface, so as the nail grows the whole gradient moves down the finger and the fade ends up in the wrong place within about ten days. A built ombré is blended while the acrylic is still workable, so the transition is part of the nail's structure. Three weeks later it still reads as a deliberate fade rather than a mistake.

Building it takes longer because the two powders have to be laid and blended before either sets, one nail at a time, with no way to go back and adjust once they have. That is the entire price difference between an ombré set and a single-color one.

The three versions people ask for

• Baby boomer. Sheer pink at the cuticle fading to soft white at the tip — a French tip with the line dissolved. Overwhelmingly the most requested fade here, and the one that suits the widest range of hands.
• Color fade. Any two colors, usually a light cuticle into a saturated tip. Cooler pairings read more graphic; anything within two shades of each other reads soft.
• Glitter fade. Solid color at the base blending into glitter at the free edge. It hides regrowth better than any other fade, which makes it a practical choice if you go the full four weeks between visits.

Bring a photo. Ombré is one of the services where the word means five different things to five different people, and a picture settles it in seconds.

How the fade is made

1. The nail is prepped and the base color is applied over the nail bed.
2. The second color goes on at the free edge while the first is still workable.
3. The two are tapped and feathered together across the overlap until the join disappears.
4. The nail is filed and refined once the acrylic has set, which sharpens the fade rather than blurring it.
5. A gloss top coat goes over the whole nail.

The blending window is short, so this is not a service to rush at the end of a long day. If you want ombré, booking rather than walking in gets you a better result.

Keeping a fade looking right

Ombré grows out more gracefully than almost anything else, which is why so many clients stay with it. You will get three to four weeks before the cuticle end starts to look crowded. An ombré fill is $60 — the fade is re-blended into the new growth so the transition stays where it started.

Two habits that keep it sharp: cuticle oil daily, because a dry cuticle makes the base end of a soft fade look chalky, and a top coat refresh if you are hard on your hands. If you would rather have the fade on shorter, lower-maintenance nails, the same effect can be done on dipping powder at a lower price point.

Ombré on toes and on other shapes

Almond and coffin carry a fade better than square does, because a longer taper gives the gradient more room to travel — on a short square nail the two colors have about a centimetre to resolve in. Shaping to almond, coffin or stiletto is $10 on top of the set.

On feet, a fade is a special-occasion request rather than a regular booking, and it is priced as a design add-on with your pedicure. Say so when you book so the time is there.
