The difference between this and a painted French

A painted French puts a white stripe on top of a finished nail. Two weeks later the nail has grown, the stripe has moved, and there is a gap of bare nail between your cuticle and where the color starts. Pink & white builds the white into the nail's structure at the free edge, so growth pushes the whole thing forward evenly and the line stays where it belongs.

That is why people who wear pink & white tend to keep wearing it. It costs more up front than a painted French tip and it repays that over the following three weeks.

The smile line is the whole job

The curve where pink meets white is cut by hand on every nail, and getting ten of them to match is the most technical thing we do at the acrylic table. Three things decide whether it looks right:

• Depth. A deeper curve makes the nail bed look longer. A shallow one reads more natural. Neither is wrong; it is worth saying which you want.
• Symmetry across the hand. The index and the little finger sit at different angles to your eye, so a line that measures the same on both can still look uneven. It gets adjusted by eye, not by ruler.
• Crispness. A soft edge on a pink & white reads as a mistake, unlike on an ombré where softness is the point.

Who it suits

It flatters short and medium length more than most acrylic options, because the white tip does the work of making the nail look longer without you carrying the length. It is the standard request for weddings and for anyone who needs nails that read as polished in a conservative workplace.

It is also the least forgiving option if you want a bright color next month — you are committing to a look rather than a base. People who change color every visit are usually happier with a shellac gel over a plain set.

Wear and refills

A pink & white set holds three to four weeks like any other acrylic. The fill is $65, which is the most expensive fill on our menu because the smile line is re-cut on all ten nails rather than simply topped up.

The white can yellow slightly with heavy sun, tanning products or nicotine. If you notice it going warm at the tips, a fill resolves it — and mentioning it means we can put a fresh top coat over the white rather than assuming you had not noticed.

Booking it

Allow an hour. If you are booking for a wedding, come in two to three weeks before the day, not the week of: it gives you one fill's grace if anything chips, and it means you have already seen the shape on your own hands under normal light.

Almond and coffin shaping is $10 on top. On a pink & white, almond in particular changes the look considerably — the longer taper stretches the smile line and reads far more dramatic than the same line on a square nail.
