Why gel makes more sense on toes than on hands

Toenails grow at roughly half the speed of fingernails and your feet spend the day inside shoes rather than in and out of water, doing dishes and typing. The same shellac gel that gives two to three weeks on hands routinely gives four to six weeks on toes — often longer in winter.

Add the fact that it cures hard under the lamp, so there is no thirty-minute window where a sandal strap or a car pedal can ruin the whole appointment, and gel on toes is the best value on the pedicure menu.

What it costs

• Classic Pedicure with Gel Shellac — $55. The standard choice, about 35 minutes.
• Deluxe Pedicure with Gel Polish — $70. Longer treatment, more callus and massage work, gel finish.
• Add Shellac Gel — $20. Puts a gel finish on any other pedicure, including the Venus Signature.
• French tip — $10. A white tip on toes, a standing summer request.

Summer, sandals and vacations

The week before a beach vacation is the busiest pedicure week of our year, and gel is why. Sand, pool chemicals, sun cream and a week of sandals will strip regular polish off toes in days. Gel comes home looking the way it left.

Book it two or three days before you fly rather than the night before. It gives you room if you want a color changed, and it means your feet are not still being worked on the evening you should be packing.

Removal, and the one mistake to avoid

Gel on toes does not chip so much as grow out, and because the nail moves slowly you can end up wearing the same gel for two months. That is when people start picking at it in front of the television, which takes nail plate with it. Shellac removal only is $10, or it is included when you book your next pedicure.

Ingrown nails, thick nails and what gel will not fix

Gel is a finish, not a treatment. If a nail is ingrown, badly thickened or discolored, polish over the top hides the problem rather than solving it, and we will tell you that rather than take the booking quietly. Toenail trimming is on the menu as its own service for exactly this reason.

Anything that looks like it needs a doctor gets sent to one. That is not us being cautious for the sake of it — a fungal nail under gel gets worse in the dark, not better.
