What is different about it

Two things: what we leave out, and how long it takes. Young feet do not need callus reduction, so there are no blades and no heavy filing. Cuticles get a gentle push rather than serious work. And the whole appointment is shorter, because thirty-five minutes is about as long as most kids want to sit still with their feet in a bowl.

The gel finish is included at $50 rather than being an add-on, and it is the part they care about — it is dry when they stand up, so there is nothing to smudge on the way to the car.

Bringing a child for a first pedicure

A few things that make it go well:

• Let them pick the color before the chair. Choosing at the wall takes two minutes and gets them invested.
• Warn them about the water temperature. It is warm, not hot, but the first second is a surprise if nobody said.
• Sit next to them. Most parents book something for themselves at the same time and the two run side by side.
• Tell us if they are nervous. We slow down, explain each step, and let them watch before anything touches them.

Mother and daughter appointments

This is the most common way the service gets booked, especially before a school dance, a birthday or the first week of summer. Say when you call that you want them side by side, because two chairs together at the same time is a scheduling question rather than a service question.

Pairing it with a basic manicure for the same child works well for a special occasion and keeps the whole visit under an hour.

Age, and when we would say no

There is no hard cutoff. The realistic question is whether the child will sit for half an hour and let someone hold their foot, which varies far more by temperament than by birthday.

We will not do gel on a child who is picking at it before the appointment ends, and we will not use tools on a foot that has anything going on — a healing cut, a wart, an ingrown nail. In those cases we tidy the nails, skip the rest, and say why.

Aftercare, honestly

Gel on a child's toes lasts as long as it does on anyone's — four to six weeks — but children pick, and picked gel takes nail with it. Worth a word at home: when they want it off, bring them back, or soak it off properly. Shellac removal only is $10.

Between visits, nothing more complicated than keeping toenails cut straight across, which is what prevents most ingrown nails in kids who play sports.
